Are Dental Crowns Permanent?

Are you in need of a dental crown? It’s nice to know the basics about a dental treatment before you get it! Keep reading to learn more about dental crowns.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a hollow, ceramic, tooth-shaped cap. During dental crown placement, the dentist prepares the tooth by removing a significant portion of the enamel to make room for the crown. Once the tooth is prepared, the ceramic cap is permanently cemented over the tooth. Dental crowns can also be utilized for tooth replacement by attaching to a dental implant or holding a dental bridge in place.

What Can Dental Crowns Treat?

Crowns are an extremely versatile restoration that can be used to:

  • Cover a worn-down, misshapen, or nonuniform tooth

  • Replace a missing tooth with implants or bridges

  • Strengthen a damaged, broken, or cracked tooth

  • Support a weak tooth after a root canal treatment

What Can I Expect During Dental Crown Placement?

Your dentist will prepare your tooth by removing enamel. After the enamel is removed, they will take an impression of your tooth. They will send the impression to an off-site lab where they will fabricate your crown. While you wait for your crown to be made, they will place a temporary crown so you can continue eating and smiling with ease! Once your crown is delivered to the office, we will check to make sure it fits correctly and then permanently cement it into place.
