What are dental crowns used for?
Dental crowns are minimally invasive dental restorations that are used for a variety of different reasons. Once a dental crown has been custom designed for a patient’s smile, it can be used to:
- Support & Protect a Damaged Tooth
- Protect a Tooth After a Root Canal
- Hold a Cracked or Broken Tooth Together
- Cover a Dental Implant
- Cover Misshapen or Discolored Teeth
Is it painful to have a dental crown placed?
Every dental crown procedure begins with a local anesthetic being injected into the gums near the tooth that is receiving the crown, which completely numbs the affected area. Once the anesthetic wears off a few hours after the procedure, your mouth may still feel a little uncomfortable, but you shouldn’t be in pain. However, it’s not a bad idea to keep an over-the-counter pain medication on hand just in case. If you experience an unusual amount of pain or swelling, please give our office a call.
How long do dental crowns last?
Dental crowns often last around 10 to 15 years, as long as they are treated well. To ensure that your crown lasts for as long as possible, we recommend scheduling biannual cleanings and exams with our team and practicing good oral hygiene at home. You should also never chew anything with a crown that you wouldn’t chew with natural teeth. If your crown ever falls off or becomes damaged in any way, our team would be happy to assist. With our flexible financing options and in-house membership plan, receiving a new affordable dental crown is easy!
